Doris Hamilton Back to all Bios previous | next

Born and raised in Harlem, dancing the latest moves to the latest rhythm and blues hits was the extent of Doris’s knowledge of dance. Although she loved to dance, Doris never desired formal dance training. All that changed when Doris fell in love with African dance as an adult. She began taking an aerobic exercise class taught by a wonderful instructor named Inawemimo. In 2005, Doris was asked to join Inawemimo’s Nyumbani Dance Ensemble created to highlight her group of beginner African dancers. One year later, Nyumbani merged with the Roots and Culture Dance Ensemble, directed by Penny Pitterson, and Doris became one of the principle dancers. Four years after joining Roots and Culture, Doris was invited to join Venus Rising, and the joy of her fabulous journey continues.
